Chapter 2“I was born, no made, in a war torn country. Science made me; and man shaped me. I was to be a mindless killing machine. Made for war, to fight a war I never wanted to fight. I am Anna.” *somewhere in a unnamed war torn land* The practice of cloning had been around for years, but the army wanted more. The lure of having humans with animal trades and raw power looked very promising. For once Army and scientists had the same goal. What each one wanted after that goal however was completely different. The scienests just wanted to know if that could make a full consciousness hybrid to advance science. The army simply wanted an easy-to-control, mindless, killing, solder that was disposable. I remember even after all these years. I first gained connesness in a water filled tube, wires and an air hose attached to me. I felt weightless, and my hair and tail were floating around me. Then I fell back into my slumber. My life as a horse hybrid had begun. One of the scientists approaches my bed. I watch him with interest. He specks to me, “Hi, can you understand me?” I nod my head yes; this seemed to cause great excitement within the scientists, because they start scribing on their clipboards. “Can you speck?” he asks. I shake my head no. I didn’t know how. He specks to the other scientists “Oh well, you can’t win them all.”, and they all laugh. “With a little training, she will be the best thing to ever happen in the world of science.” After two or three weeks, the scientists gave me a name, Anna. My training took years, and included speech, manners, and everything else that one learns from their parents. In time the scientists and I became like family. One day I noticed that while the people around me seemed to be ageing, but I was not. When I asked about it, I was told that when I was born, I was injected with a drug that slowed my aging. I was resistant to all kinds of poisons, and had incredible stamina too. I was told that this would help me later on in life, although I couldn’t under stand why. Army trainers came and went now and then, giving me some basic training, on how to use guns, and some hand to hand combat too. Unlike the scientists however, they acted like I was a freak and referred to me as “that thing” even when I was standing right there. Needless to say, I never became friends with any of my instructors. Soon my 18th birthday was coming up, but instead of looking happy like they usually do, the scientists look worried. When I ask what’s wrong, no one will look me in the eye. One scientist and I have become closer then the others, so I turn to him for answers. His name was Felix and he’s about 2 years older then me. I know he likes me, so I seek him out, and corner him. “What’s going on?” I demand. “An… Anna,” he stammers, “Th... their coming.” “Who?” I ask. He looks away, now I’m getting scared and mad. “Who?” I ask once more. He flinches at the tone of my voice, “The Army.” I’m surprised, so I ask, “Is that it? They’ve been here before” It was true. Army commanders and generals had always come and went every now and then, so I didn’t get why everybody was upset about. I looked at Felix with a puzzled look. He looks me right in the eyes, and speaks, “Anna they’re coming to take you away… forever.” He keeps talking… I had wandered around the rest of the day in a daze. Now I lay in my bed, still shocked, at what Felix had told me. I was to become a weapon. I was nothing more then an attempt to win the war my country was fighting. The sound of voices outside my door brings me back to my senses and wiping the smirk off my face, makes me walk over peeking out a crack in the door. “We cannot allow them to take her, she’ll be killed.” Felix was talking to the rest of the scientists. “We know, but what can we do?” they answer. They keep moving and I have to swing both of my ears forwarded to hear. “I have a contact in the allies. He can take her to a ship heading to America” Felix again. “You know what will happen if the army finds out don’t you?” one of the other scientists says. I can’t hear the answer; they’ve moved to far down the hall. I still lay wake in bed an hour later. My door opens and I set up, Felix is standing there with heavy clothes, coat and snowshoes. “Quickly, put these on, you must hurry, the army is coming.” I dress and Felix pulls me out of my room and down the hall. There in front of the back door, everyone is there with grim, but determined, looks on their faces. They quietly hand me food and water. Felix hands me a peace of paper. “This is a contact, move only at night, stay way from towns, and don’t trust any one.” He turns away, but he keeps talking, “oh one last thing, keep going no matter what you hear, and the army will be looking for you.” I grab him, spin him around, embrace and kiss him. After we pull apart I look around at my friends, one last time. As I make eye contact with each person, they smile and nod. The sound of tires coming makes everyone look at each other. “Go now! Head for the trees and don’t stop” Felix commands. As I open the door and step out, he speaks once more “Goodbye Anna, I hope you never forget us.” The door closes. ‘How could I ever forget you all?’ I say in my head as I head for the trees. The shock of the cold nearly makes me turn back. As I reach the trees, I look at the place that was my home for 18 years. Suddenly gunfire erupts and I clap a hand to my mouth. I turn away sobbing, and run into the night. For 5 weeks I move quietly at night, I’m wanted by my own country, but no one knows about it. Massive patrols move around looking for me under the alias of “training exercises”. My contacts don’t speak to me, but they feed me and give me places to hide, rest, and gather my strength. When I go, they hand me the next contact info. The journey is hard and dangerous. *a week later* I’d made it and soon I’m on a ship heading for America. Now the trip is long and uneventful; the crew manly keeps away from me and only approach me to give me some food and water For years, I wander around, riding on trains, heading north south east or west. I steal or hunt for my food. One night, as I ride the train through the vast desert in Arizona, the train stops at a siding in the middle of the night. Drifting in and out of sleep, my ears pick something up. Someone was coming, suddenly a beam of light hits me, making me throw my hands up to cover my face, and a voice calls out. “Hey! You can’t be here.” It was a guard. I don’t hesitate; I leap off the train and run. The guard calls after me but I don’t stop. Soon after I had left the train and guard far behind, I stop and take in my surroundings. I was in the middle of the desert, a good 3 miles from the last town, and 20 miles to the next one. Some rocks stick up out of the sand, crossing to make a small cave. Suddenly, night turns into day. A huge red fireball leaps into the air a mile or two away. It was massive; at lest a mile wide and 2 miles high. The size and heat from it takes my breath away. The sound hits a few seconds later. I have to cover my ears to keep from going deaf, sand pelts my body. It passes as quickly as it came leaving me coughing sand out of my mouth. I ask myself in a slightly panicked voice “What in the hell is that?” I see what looks like a small black dot in the middle of the fire. As I look harder, something hits the ground with a dull thud. It was a 2ft wide bolder! I yell “Oh shit!”, as I run to the cave, rocks raining down all around me. I stuff my body into the shallow, not to mention, small space between the rocks. Rocks the sizes of small cars keep raining down for a good 10 minutes. Then all is quiet. I poke my head out, my ears turning to listen. The fireball is gone. I pry my body out of the hole, and look in the direction of the blast. ‘Hummm… now what?’ I think. I should run as fast as I can in the opposite direction, something THAT big had to catch someone eye, but in the end my curiosity gets the best of me and I begin to walk in the direction of the blast. It was just getting light out when I came to the spot. I was amazed, a huge crater sat before me, a mile around and almost as deep. Little medal fragments glittered in the early sun light. The bottom of it was still in shadow, so I couldn’t see all the way down. My ears pick something up. Helicopters were coming! From the sound of it they were still 5 miles away. I couldn’t be seen, so I left the area quickly, heading back to the tracks. ‘This was going to be big.’ I think. Heading any farther west was out of the question, so I start to head north, to some place called Montana. Little did I know it, but at that time, in California, on an empty beach, a small boat, under the cover of fog and darkness, had come ashore. People in wetsuits climb out and in the thin moonlight that made its way through the fog, the patches of my country elite covet ops force glistened, Kampfschwimmers. Quickly they unload their equipment, strip off the wetsuits, placed them back into the boat and pushed it back to sea. The boat heads back to the sub that had dropped them off. The Army was still looking for me. Story Copyright 2006 “The White Wolf” all rights reserved.
