Restricting access to content for copyright reasonsI've been doing some reading up on copyrights and the Internet. It's been interesting, if not a bit confusing. Anyhow, one of the common threads that I've seen in my reading has to do with concept of Implied License of a copyright. From what I've read in some court decisions, if someone owns the copyright to a written work and posts it on the Internet without any access restrictions then there could be an issue. Transfers of copyright and exclusive licenses must be made in writing, however the writing requirement does not apply to non-exclusive licenses that do not transfer ownership of the copyright. Instead, a copyright owner may grant an nonexclusive license expressly or implied through content. Not being a lawyer it's hard for me to figure out exactly what this means, other than the one situation that I know of, which is that other websites can keep copies of my pages on their systems, typically as archives, allowing them to display the content of my site, and the contributing authors, without requesting to do so. Rather than give anyone the implicit right to the works on my site, both mine and those of people who have contributed, I am going to move to a registration requirement in order to access the stories and other materials here. I do this not to obtain email address or any other information. I do it because there are too many jerks out there who are taking the hard work of others and passing it off as their own. So, from this point forward you'll need to register and log in before you'll be able to read any of the stories. Hopefully blog posts will still be visible, otherwise it will be hard to get the word out on this change. If you have any problems accessing information on the site after registering please let me know.
